A dear colleague asked if I could mentor her sister who was very unhappy in her job but unable to quit because she needed the pay which ironically went mostly towards commuting to and from work which was miles away from home (she works on Lagos Island and lives in a suburb on the mainland).
I sat down with this young lady, mid twenties and she told me how the politics in the company and routine nature of the job was the antithesis of her highly creative personality, she showed me several beautiful pieces she had done in her spare time, buying Tees and turning them into a canvas to create beautiful artwork with scraps: pieces of cloths, thread, beads, shells, name it.
I asked her, why she had not commercialized her art and she said "it won’t pay the bills", people were not willing to pay a lot for them and it takes time to build each one. So what else do you like to do apart from create these pieces I asked? Oh I love to teach! I also like investigative journalism which is why she took a job at a Newspaper in the first place but only got stuck with the “boring” stuff.
Why not combine your love of Arts with your love of teaching and create Art classes that will not only get you doing what you love but earning enough?.
We then had a delightful time brainstorming the modalities, evenings and weekends to save on rent, how to get children and adults to attend, strategies on how to create excitement around the program and a brand was born, unique to her, exciting to watch metamorphose and completely born from her passion, her personality and her skills.
That is why we exist at VANOTO, to create a profitable Brand that is a perfect fit for YOU.
